With many people making the move toward a more sustainable and energy efficient lifestyle, tradespeople would do well to consider how a few changes to their practises could help to add differentiation to their services and boost their client base.

Being energy efficient is not only of benefit to the environment either - cutting back on unnecessary utility use can also reduce operating costs, for you and your clients.

And, as we all know, a happy client is a repeat client.

Plumbers, electricians and builders may like to think about registering with industry specific bodies who certify tradespeople that are interested in maintaining sustainable processes.

GreenSmart Builders are overseen by the Housing Industry Association, who provide accreditation and training.

Similarly, Green Living Builders are accredited through the Master Builders Association.

Both professional groups offer their clients information and advice about creating sustainable homes, developments and products for consumers and the housing industry.

The GreenPlumbers group is a Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia initiative. Its members advise consumers about solar hot water, water conservation and cost-effective appliances.

EcoSmart Electricians gain certification through the National Electrical and Communications Association and help consumers by providing with specific information about saving energy in the home with lighting, heating and solar generation systems.
